Alice Through Ralph Steadman's Eyes.
I’m a huge fan of the Artworks of Ralph Stedman. His illustrations for Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas brought the story to life for me as a teenager and I loved every minute of that story. I’d copy the drawings from the books and put them on my walls. So full of life and character, they are what Johnny Depp brought to life when I eventually saw the film version, not so much Hunter S...

Chronic Bitch Face.
I never get tired of Kris Atomic’s Blog. The drawings of her day to day are always beautiful, and now you can buy prints! The first one up just happens to be my most favourite of her works, I obviously identify with it strongly.

Saturday Evening.
I am having one of the best Saturday evenings I’ve had in a long time. I’m ill so I cancelled all my plans this weekend and resigned myself to feeling blue but my lovely boyfriend has been doing my best to brighten things up. At the moment we are waiting on these cookies baking… Hot Cocoa Cookies. And while we baked we listened to non stop Disney sing-a-longs… ...

Trial by Fire.
Kara Gunter’s work explores the dynamic effects of fire. She is using it as a force for creation and change, not destruction and I think this is beautiful. Trial by Fire explores themes of devastation followed by the cycle of rebirth. Referenced are eggs, seeds and cast away skins, all signs that the metamorphosis has begun. Salt, also attributed with purifying and preservation affects...

Squeeze.
Fantastic public installation by Doris Salcedo for the Istanbul Biennial 2003. This reminds me of another installation I was lucky enough to see last year at the Liverpool Biennial. Created by Artist Do Ho Suh, it is an exact recreation of the home he grew up in. It appears as if dropped from the sky in this new context of a Liverpool alleyway. Incidentally the Biennial was my first...

Anna Pavlova.
One of my favourite paintings, even if only for the colour. That flame orange is delicious. And… The real thing.

Exciting stuff!!
The Sculpture Show will be opening at The National Gallery in Edinburgh next month and it looks to be a fantastic show. The list of artists is fairly varied but they are all big names; Rodin, Degas, Damien Hirst, Martin Boyce, Karla Black, Henry Moore, Barbara Hepworth and Ron Mueck. I’m secretly hoping that some of my own favourite artists will be shown too. All to often sculpture is...

The Impossible Project.
Darkslides. In order to create the most beautiful analog instant film ever, Impossible optimized the new film material in every single detail. One of these details is the so-called darkslide. Basically the darkslide is a purely technical necessity, protecting the film from light as long as it is outside the camera. Impossible is converting the darkslides to collector cards by transforming them...

An embarrassment of riches.
The Unique Creatures might be one of the most interesting style blogs I’ve seen around. The selection on offer are not only people with fantastic and individual style but are quite often truly inspirational people. I not only covet Angela Davis’ sense of style but also her attitude, knowledge and drive. Likewise with Lee Miller and Peter Beard they may look good but the style of their...

A cup of Darjeeling.
I know I am not alone in loving Wes Anderson films and it’s nothing new to be saying so. But there is a reason we all love them, they are really very good. They’re original, beautiful to look at and very funny. So I thought I’d share with you my love of the Darjeeling Limited. It’s not my all time favourite (the would be Rushmore) but I do love pretty much everything about...

Red plume.
I recently found a review for the show, Contemplating the Void: Interventions in the Guggenheim Museum. While the show has long since past you can still appreciate the proposals that have been made. Perhaps one day some of them will be realised, I hope this will be one of them.

Wilderness and imagination.
John Kenn’s drawings. They remind me of the kinds of nightmares you have as a child, your fears can feel undefined and have an unsettling strangeness all of which makes them no less frightening but maybe more humorous to look back on. The unease is beautifully illustrated…

Vaudeville.
I found a lovely archive of photographs showing Vaudeville dancers and performers in the late 19th to early 20th century, but sadly the server failed before I was able to get my fill. This is the only one I managed to capture… Happily I think it’s the best one. Should the server come back again I’ll post more and a link to the site itself.

RED.
This only adds more weight to my love of red lipstick. Such a great idea from Alyson Fox and her project A Shade of Red.   It was shortly after the British Red Cross arrived, though it may have no connection, that a very large quantity of lipstick arrived…Women lay in bed with no sheets and no nightie but with scarlet red lips, you saw them wandering about with nothing but a blanket over...

Chocolate dream.
Cool Hunting is one of my most favourite sites around, they deal with everything and thier videos are jammed with the most interesting people. This is an older one which interviews the Mast Brothers, American artisan chocolatiers, on the development of their unique and delicious business. Those machines, those beards… all that chocolate! It’s an all round treat.

Silk Moth Dance.
I once was lucky enough to come across a sapling which had been taken over by a swarm of silk moth larvae. It was like happening across something from another world. Completely covered in white silk from top to toe it wouldn’t have looked out of place in Narnia. If I can find some of the photos I took then I’ll upload them, but in the mean time.

I’ve become a little bit obsessed with lipstick. Nothing seems to make me feel quite as dressed as some good red lips at the moment and it doesn’t matter how scruffy I am from the lips down.

Rocks.
I have fallen in love with the jewellery of London based designer Macha. The rings are especially gorgeous and so unique, replacing a gemstone with a rock of precious metal so classic but completely original. You don’t even want to know what I would do for one of these rings!

Imagination.
Ted is just fantastic, you can lose many hours following threads of ideas and come away so much better off for it. These are two videos I watched late last night following the thread of imagination. Elizabeth Gilbert is not a writer I’m familiar with but I just loved the way she talked about the fear of failing and her discomfort at the ease (and expected) relationship that creativity has...

I wish this had been my idea.
Just perfect. Connect the dots tattoo, amazing! Perhaps if I got something similar in white ink it wouldn’t be too much of a rip off. But then again I’m so pale it hardly seems worth while. Found on Flickr.
