Alice Through Ralph Steadman's Eyes.

I’m a huge fan of the Artworks of Ralph Stedman. His illustrations for Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas brought the story to life for me as a teenager and I loved every minute of that story. I’d copy the drawings from the books and put them on my walls. So full of life and character, they are what Johnny Depp brought to life when I eventually saw the film version, not so much Hunter S Thompson.

Now I have discovered these illustrations he has made for Alice in Wonderland, which is of course one of my childhood favourites… You’d be hard pushed to find a girl who doesn’t feel the same way. They seem darkly twisted and sometimes confusing, just the way the story needs, feast your eyes.

Chronic Bitch Face.

I never get tired of Kris Atomic’s Blog.

The drawings of her day to day are always beautiful, and now you can buy prints! The first one up just happens to be my most favourite of her works, I obviously identify with it strongly.

Saturday Evening.

I am having one of the best Saturday evenings I’ve had in a long time.

I’m ill so I cancelled all my plans this weekend and resigned myself to feeling blue but my lovely boyfriend has been doing my best to brighten things up.

At the moment we are waiting on these cookies baking…

Hot Cocoa Cookies.

And while we baked we listened to non stop Disney sing-a-longs…

Best night ever.

Trial by Fire.

Kara Gunter’s work explores the dynamic effects of fire. She is using it as a force for creation and change, not destruction and I think this is beautiful.

image

Trial by Fire explores themes of devastation followed by the cycle of rebirth. Referenced are eggs, seeds and cast away skins, all signs that the metamorphosis has begun. Salt, also attributed with purifying and preservation affects suspends the moment of purity in time, holding the cycle’s completion in stasis.

image

According to fire ecology, the study of fire and its relationship to living organisms, fire is a necessity for propagation.

image

I’ve been thinking for a while now about the act of burning something that you have spent time crafting. It seems like a fascinating process to me and Kara Gunter’s work could be the push that I need to try it out.

Fantastic public installation by Doris Salcedo for the Istanbul Biennial 2003.

image

This reminds me of another installation I was lucky enough to see last year at the Liverpool Biennial. Created by Artist Do Ho Suh, it is an exact recreation of the home he grew up in. It appears as if dropped from the sky in this new context of a Liverpool alleyway.

image

Incidentally the Biennial was my first visit to Liverpool and I absolutely loved it, what a fantastic city.

Anna Pavlova.

One of my favourite paintings, even if only for the colour. That flame orange is delicious.

Exciting stuff!!

The Sculpture Show will be opening at The National Gallery in Edinburgh next month and it looks to be a fantastic show. The list of artists is fairly varied but they are all big names; Rodin, Degas, Damien Hirst, Martin Boyce, Karla Black, Henry Moore, Barbara Hepworth and Ron Mueck. I’m secretly hoping that some of my own favourite artists will be shown too.

image

All to often sculpture is viewed as being only static or cumbersome art works moulded from clay but there’s so much more to it than that.

I really can’t wait to see this show it has the potential to be fantastic.

The Impossible Project.

Darkslides.

In order to create the most beautiful analog instant film ever, Impossible optimized the new film material in every single detail. One of these details is the so-called darkslide.

Basically the darkslide is a purely technical necessity, protecting the film from light as long as it is outside the camera. Impossible is converting the darkslides to collector cards by transforming them into an area to present art projects. On a regular basis we will invite artists to develop refreshing, creative and inspiring content that turns the Impossible Darkslides into unique pieces of art.

It’s my new favourite colour for everything!

I never used to be a fan of blue, it’s a very recently discovered love but now I just can’t get enough of this dress…
